Camping tents are perhaps one of the most critical items you should usually consider when planning an outdoor trip or an unforgettable family camping experience. We looked at the best family tents for car camping available and came up with the five best options to accommodate and provide a little slice of heaven for you and your family.

How to Buy a Family Tent

To determine the right family tent, you’ll need to consider how easy it is to use, the total number of people, budget, durability, and the material.

Size:

The size of the tent is the first thing you to consider. For example, the 10-Person tent we review can accommodate ten traditional camping pads though some are spacious than others. But if you want luxurious camping, it’s perfect for a family of 4–5 with your bags, Overlanding gears, and room to grow. We also concluded that the minimum peak tent height should be 6 ft, allowing most adults to stand comfortably.  We cover larger, family tents within this review, but consider a ground tent if you’re looking for something more compact.

Material and weatherproof:

The material quality is also something to consider because you would want something weatherproof and durable. The tent should stay dry in a light shower and withstand high winds and heavy rain without falling or collapsing. Thus, our recommend tents are made with higher-density fabric materials like nylon and polyester and can withstand rugged conditions easily.

Ease of setup:

Ease of use is one of the essential factors for campers. And the star feature of these tents is their instant, easy setup process. Though these instant tents are handy and quick to install, you’ll still have to take them down and bring them home after your camping trip. If your looking for a rapid set up and take tear down consider a roof top tent.

Is it worth your money:

We decided that the tents for this guide should not be pricy, made of top-of-the-line lightest materials, but should be durable enough to last for years. Our recommended overland ground tents are available at a reasonable price—leaving you with savings to invest in other camping equipment like camping air mattresses, sleeping bags, camp kitchens, and good coolers for camping.

Extra parts:

We also considered pole strength and arrangements, zipper durability, rain-fly tie-downs, privacy, and the construction of the doors and windows. Much of which contributes to the general comfort of the tent.

Core 9 Person Instant Cabin Tent Image

Core 9 Person Instant Cabin Tent

★★★★★ (4.8)

  • Sleeps 9 People
  • 3 Season
  • Weight 27.62 Pounds
  • Maximum Height 78 Inches

Price Tested: $252.18 USD

Core is a well-known camping brand that has been around for years. Their products are commonly reliable and easy to use by anyone. Its 9-Person Instant Cabin Tent ticks all the boxes for us when it comes to innovative features. It comes with pre-attached posts, making setup a breeze. It’s completely instant, and you can usually set it up in about 60 seconds.

The tent is well designed. It looks like an umbrella with attached walls and a floor and takes a few seconds to install it and few minutes to snap it back into place. It is spacious to lay nine sleeping pads for nine persons. It’s also tall enough to leave the rain fly off and crafted with a room divider that adds a bit of privacy. You can remove the rainfly on clear nights to gaze up at the stars through the oversized mesh ceiling.

This Core has excellent ventilation in every section to ensure maximum airflow in every room. It’s suitable for hot or warm weather. It also features a highly-praised Core H20-Block Technology that effectively keeps the water out. We like that one entire side unzips and opens up. It makes it easy to get things in and out of the tent.

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Set up is extremely fast
  • Strong built
  • Spacious and great height

Cons:

  • Tiny complaint about the Zippers

The Core Instant Cabin Tent has all the features most families need — it’s spacious, versatile, well ventilated, and can withstand strong winds and rainy nights.

OT QOMOTOP 8-person Tent Image

OT QOMOTOP 8-person Tent

★★★★★ (4.5)

  • Occupancy 8 People
  • Weight 26.9 Pounds
  • Waterproof Pop Up Tent
  • Includes: Tent Stakes, Rainfly

Price Tested: $174.77 USD

The OT QOMOTOP brand recently entered the industry with a collection of four tents made in the same style. But for this review, we focus on the eight-person tent; however, they all have the same features, except for height. The tent is a good choice if you need a tent for a car camping trip and in particular, if you need to change place frequently
It’s well made, especially the poles. And it slides easily to engage the button locks. It holds up well against some pretty fierce winds and even through a short but heavy rain. It goes up fast and pops back down in a minute. It’s an instant setup tent with telescopic poles and a couple of minutes more to attach the fly. The tent and accessories fit back into the carry bag once the air is out of the folds, making it convenient to carry even if you have limited space or a small car.
It’s big enough to fit 2-queen air mattresses, a small table and chairs, and space for bags. However, if you want to hang in the tent with your family or play cards during the day, we recommend piling one air mattress on top of the other. Like most modern camping tents, this one has its weather protection system and a waterproof rating like a traditional umbrella.

Pros:

  • Easy to set up and move around
  • It comes with a power port
  • Lots of headroom

Cons:

  • Poor waterproof

If you are looking for a summer family camping tent that is extremely easy to use, spacious enough for 4-5 people, and very affordable, this OT QOMOTOP Tent is for you.

This budget-friendly tent is easy to set up and pack, but the feature we like is its five mesh windows and mesh roof, which provides beautiful views of the sky and excellent airflow through the tent.

The tent is massive! It’s big enough for eight sleeping bags or space to fit a family of five with separate sleeping quarters for kids and parents and with plenty of room to store gear and walk around. It has E-port as well as mesh pockets to keep keys, flashlights, or phones. Like the other tents we review, it has a divider to separate the rooms nicely for privacy.

It made camping a lot more enjoyable and it served as a good gathering place for friends and families. You can have chairs and a table in there to play cards, and it’s fantastic with all the mesh windows open! The tent is a tunnel-type tent with one large mesh door and five mesh windows, a sturdy frame, and features that make it pleasant for a hot summer day.

With a height of 6.5 ft and a cabin style, the Mammoth Creek 10 Person Cabin was among the roomiest of the tents we review, with more space to help you stay organized and sleep more comfortably. Core 11 Person Family Cabin Tent with Screen Room Image

Core 11 Person Family Cabin Tent with Screen Room

★★★★★ (4.5)

  • Sleeps 11 People
  • Weight 32.6 lbs (14.79 Kilograms)
  • Includes: Tent Stakes, Rainfly
  • Made from Durable 68D Polyester

Price Tested: $269.99 USD

With a trustworthy brand name and a great price tag, the Core 11 Person Cabin Tent with Screen Room is an excellent choice if you have a small family that doesn’t mind sleeping in one room. Like the Core 9-Person Instant Cabin Tent, this model is set up quickly and efficiently. Although, this is slightly less impressive as it takes more time to install.

We like that it’s a cabin-type design. This is advantageous since such a structure means a large number of volumes inside, and with such a large screen room and windows, you can feel at ease. This sensation even increases with an impressive height of 86.4-inch. The tent and rainfly are made of 68D polyester, which is standard and sturdy. While the tent is supposed to be waterproof, they recommend using a sealer.

The Core 11 Cabin Tent has a 204 sq ft (18.96 m2) floor area. For an 11-person tent at 1.72 m2 per person. It’s better than most tents currently available in the market. But if you want luxurious camping, it’s perfect for a family of 5–6, including small children. With plenty of space to organize life in the tent!!! Two queen air mattresses with an extra storage room at the “feet” for luggage, etc. It also includes several tiny mesh pockets on the walls and an electrical cord access port.

Pros:

  • It keeps the bugs away
  • Excellent packed size
  • Great space & height.
  • It has the best area and weight ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Tents

What is the best overland tent for a family of 4?

The typical four-person tent areas are around 240cm x 220cm in the main floor area, which is enough space for a full-size air mattress and two people. But if you want your family to sleep and move inside the tent comfortably, we suggest an 8–10-person tent for four.

How to heat your tent without an electric heater?

You can use an electric blanket or warm stones, or hot water bottles to increase the temperature of the tent. You can also set the tent over the bonfire but after the fire has died out.

How to use, care and maintenance?

  • Use a groundsheet.
  • Clean the campsite
  • Make a few ground rules.
  • Zip it up
  • Sweep out before packing.
  • Make sure it’s dry before storing.

Is a footprint needed for my tent?

In general, you don’t need a footprint. However, there are times when you’ll need to have a print in your tent. In wet weather, for example, a footprint will help to prevent moisture from entering the tent. If you have no option but to set your tent on a rough surface, a footprint will help smooth it out.
